Getting Social Media to Work For You

Social Media is here to stay. There aren't many of you that haven't heard of Facebook, You Tube or Twitter.

Initially these were designed to help friends share media and stay connected, but it soon became obvious how these free tools can help our businesses.

Giving your customers and clients the oppertunity to contact and interact with your company in a medium that they feel comfortable with will encourage them to interact more often. This interaction will often show up in their personal feeds and it's in these feeds that will be seen by 100s of potential customers.

Some of you may have noticed I put the word "free" above in italics. This isn't becasue these types have media charge you, but they will cost you time. Before you decide on which type of social media is right for your business there are some thing you should ask yourself first.

Do you currently use Social Media?

If you already use a particular type of social media then encorporating your business into the time you spend on there will be relatively easy. You will already be familar with it's use and have a number of friends/followers that can promote your company straight away.

Do you use a Computer and/or Smart Phone on a daily basis?

Social Media is a very powerful tool, but a lot happens in a short space of time. Dropping in on these tools once a week or once a month could mean that you miss something important hapening within your industry. You may have left a current or new customer waiting indefinately for some answers that leaves them frustrated, or you may have missed the oppertunity to address a complaint that may have been made.

What do you have to say?

Getting traffic to your website is what this is all about, but you need to have engaging content to encourage repeat visits. Constantly promoting your latest product or service will begin to annoy poeple, so think outside the box. Offer up tutorials or video reviews/demonstrations, comment on industry conferences or changes that will be interesting to you and your client base; throw in the odd competition or question to encourage interaction.

Remember that different forms of Social Media can be used in different ways: Twitter versus Facebook
